Aggregates are usually classified on the basis of their size:

  • Coarse aggregate (>4 mm) (e.g. gravel)
  • Fine aggregate (<4 mm) (e.g. sand)
  • Filler (<0,063 mm)

Other classifications can be added on the basis of their mineralogical composition:

  • Calcareous
  • Quartziticor on the basis of their origin:
    Natural (usually with smooth shape)
    Crushed (usually with angular shape)
